CTC

The full form of CTC is Cost to Company. CTC is the total amount an employer spends on an employee in one year. It includes salary, allowances, bonuses, the employer's PF and ESIC contributions, gratuity, and benefits like health insurance. CTC is always quoted annually, and it is not the same as your in-hand salary.

CTC Full Form

CTC stands for Cost to Company. It is the most common abbreviation used in Indian offer letters, job portals, and salary negotiations. The long form, full name, and full meaning of CTC in any job or salary discussion is simply Cost to Company.

CTC Full Form in Government

In government offices, CTC can also mean Certificate of Transfer of Charge. This is a form (often called a CTC form) that officers sign when they hand over or take over charge of a post. In PSUs and government-owned companies, though, CTC on a pay statement still means Cost to Company.

What Is CTC? Meaning Of CTC In Salary

CTC meaning in salary: CTC is the employer's total yearly cost of keeping you on the payroll. It is "cost to the company", not "money to the employee". Think of CTC as everything the company pays because of you:

  • What it pays to you (basic salary, allowances, bonus)
  • What it pays on your behalf (employer PF, ESIC, insurance premium)
  • What it sets aside for later (gratuity)

CTC Meaning in Job Offers

When a recruiter says "the role offers 6 LPA CTC", they mean the company will spend ₹6,00,000 a year on you. Only part of that reaches your bank account each month.

What is CTC in an Employee's Salary and in a Company?

For an employee, CTC is the full value of the salary package, including amounts never received as cash, such as employer PF and insurance. For the employer, CTC is a budgeting figure: HR and finance teams use it to plan headcount costs, salary bands, and increments.

What Does CTC Include? (Components Of CTC)

A typical CTC has four building blocks.

1. Fixed Pay (Cash Components)

Basic Salary

The core of the salary. Under the new Labour Codes, basic plus DA should generally be at least 50% of total pay. PF and gratuity are calculated on it.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

Usually 40% to 50% of basic, depending on the city.

Special and Other Allowances

Special allowance is the balancing amount that completes the fixed pay. Other allowances can include conveyance, LTA, medical, meal or phone. Here's a detailed guide on the different allowances in salary and how each is taxed.

2. Variable Pay

Performance bonus, incentives, sales commissions or a joining bonus. This part is not guaranteed.

3. Employer Statutory Contributions

Employer PF

12% of PF wages. This is often capped on a wage of ₹25,000/month, since the EPF ceiling was raised from ₹15,000 in September 2026.

Employer ESIC

3.25% of gross. It applies only if monthly gross is ₹21,000 or less.

Gratuity

About 4.81% of basic is set aside every year.

4. Benefits and Perks

Group health insurance, term or accident insurance, meal cards, cab facility, NPS contribution and ESOPs.

How Is CTC Calculated In Salary? (CTC Formula)

CTC = Gross Salary + Employer PF + Employer ESIC + Gratuity + Insurance & Other Benefits

And from CTC to take-home:

Gross Salary = CTC − Employer contributions (PF, ESIC, gratuity) − Non-cash benefits

In-Hand Salary = Gross Salary − Employee PF − Employee ESIC − Professional Tax − TDS

What is CTC in Salary with Example (₹10 LPA)

Here is how a ₹10,00,000 CTC is typically structured. This example assumes employer PF is capped at the ₹25,000 wage ceiling.

ComponentMonthly (₹)Annual (₹)
Basic Salary40,0004,80,000
HRA (40% of basic)16,0001,92,000
Special Allowance14,4931,73,912
Fixed Gross Salary70,4938,45,912
Performance Bonus (variable)–80,000
Employer PF3,00036,000
Gratuity (4.81% of basic)1,92423,088
Group Health Insurance1,25015,000
Total CTC~83,33310,00,000

In-hand salary: ₹70,493 − ₹3,000 (employee PF) − up to ₹200 (professional tax, state-dependent) ≈ ₹67,300–₹67,500 per month.

There's no income tax here under the new regime, because total taxable income stays under ₹12 lakh after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. The bonus is paid separately. So a 10 LPA CTC means about ₹67,000 a month in hand, not ₹83,333.

Difference Between CTC and Gross Salary

Gross salary is CTC minus employer-side costs like employer PF, ESIC, gratuity and insurance. Read our full guide on gross salary to see how it is calculated on the payslip.

Difference Between CTC and In-Hand Salary

In-hand salary is what is left after employer costs are removed and employee deductions are taken out.

Why is Take-Home Salary Different from CTC?

  1. Employer PF and ESIC go to government schemes, not your bank account.
  2. Gratuity is only a provision. It is paid at exit, usually after 5 years (1 year for fixed-term employees under the Social Security Code).
  3. Insurance premiums are paid directly to the insurer.
  4. Variable pay is paid later and depends on performance.
  5. Your own PF, ESIC, professional tax, and TDS are deducted every month.

Difference Between CTC and LPA

There is no real difference. LPA (Lakhs Per Annum) is just a unit, and CTC is what is being measured. "8 LPA CTC" means a Cost to Company of ₹8,00,000 a year. When a recruiter quotes LPA, it is almost always the CTC, not in-hand pay.

TTC vs CTC

TTC (Total Target Compensation) is fixed pay plus target variable pay at 100% payout. It usually excludes employer contributions like PF, gratuity, and insurance. CTC includes those employer costs, so CTC is normally higher than TTC for the same role.

Is CTC Monthly Or Yearly?

CTC is yearly (annual). Unless an offer letter clearly says "monthly CTC", the figure always refers to 12 months.

Annual CTC / CTC Per Annum

The total cost to company for one year, for example, ₹6,00,000 per annum.

Monthly CTC / CTC Per Month

Annual CTC ÷ 12. It is a planning figure, not your monthly salary. A ₹6 LPA CTC means a monthly CTC of ₹50,000, but in-hand will be lower.

Is Current CTC Monthly or Yearly?

Recruiters always expect current CTC as an annual figure.

Fixed CTC Vs Variable CTC

What is Fixed CTC?

The guaranteed part of CTC. It includes basic, HRA, allowances and statutory employer contributions, and it is paid every month regardless of performance.

What is Variable CTC?

The performance-linked part, such as bonuses, incentives and commissions. It can pay out at 0% to 100% (sometimes more). Current variable CTC is the variable portion of your present package.

Does CTC Include Variable Pay and Bonus?

Yes. Most companies include target variable pay and annual bonus in CTC, which is why two offers with the same CTC can have very different monthly in-hand salaries. Variable pay is part of CTC at its target value, so always ask HR for the fixed vs variable split, the payout frequency, and whether variable is paid if you resign before the payout date.

Current CTC, Expected CTC (ECTC) And Other CTC Terms

What is Last Drawn CTC?

Last drawn CTC is the annual CTC at your most recent employer. Candidates who are between jobs share it in place of current CTC.

What is Your Current CTC? How to Answer

State your total annual CTC, and add the fixed and variable split if asked.

Current CTC Example Answer

"My current CTC is ₹7.2 LPA, which includes ₹6.4 lakh fixed and ₹80,000 variable."

What is Your Expected CTC? How to Answer

Research the market range for your role and quote a range anchored on your skills. Job switches in India commonly come with a 20% to 30% hike over current CTC, depending on role, skills, and demand.

Expected CTC Example Answer

"Based on my experience and the responsibilities of this role, I'm looking at ₹9 to ₹10 LPA. I'm open to discussing the overall structure."

CTC Format, Structure And CTC Letter

A CTC letter (or CTC annexure, salary structure letter) is attached to the offer or appointment letter. It shows the component-wise breakup. A standard CTC structure format looks like this:

S. No.ComponentMonthly (₹)Annual (₹)
ABasic Salary
BHRA
CSpecial / Other Allowances
DGross Salary (A+B+C)
EEmployer PF
FEmployer ESIC (if applicable)
GGratuity
HInsurance / Other Benefits
IVariable Pay / Bonus
JTotal CTC (D+E+F+G+H+I)
KLess: Employee PF, ESIC, PT, TDS
LEstimated In-Hand (D − K)

HR teams usually maintain this as a CTC format in Excel or a CTC template, and share it with candidates as a CTC format PDF.

CTC in Salary Slip

Monthly payslips usually show earnings and deductions, not the full CTC. Some employers print annual CTC in the header for reference. You can create a compliant payslip that shows both using our free online payslip generator.

How to Write CTC in a Resume or Job Form

Write it in annual terms, for example "Current CTC: ₹6.5 LPA (Fixed ₹5.8 L + Variable ₹0.7 L)". Mentioning CTC on a resume is optional. Most candidates share it only in application forms or with recruiters.

Labour Codes And EPF Ceiling: How CTC Structures Are Changing

Two recent changes directly affect how CTC is split.

50% Wage Rule (Labour Codes, Effective November 2025)

Basic + DA should be at least 50% of total remuneration. A higher basic increases PF and gratuity, which raises employer cost within the same CTC and can lower in-hand pay.

EPF Wage Ceiling Raised to ₹25,000 (From 17 September 2026)

The mandatory PF wage ceiling went up from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. For employees whose PF was capped earlier, employer and employee PF can rise from ₹1,800 to as much as ₹3,000 per month. The ESIC limit remains ₹21,000. For a detailed breakdown, read how India's new Labour Codes impact salary.

How HR Teams Manage CTC Accurately

Defining a CTC is easy. Keeping it accurate is harder. Every month, HR has to split CTC into compliant components, apply PF and ESIC ceilings, accrue gratuity, process variable payouts, and update structures whenever rules change. Doing this in spreadsheets often leads to wrong in-hand figures and compliance gaps.

QkrHR's HR payroll software automates this. It provides:

  • Configurable CTC salary templates
  • Automatic PF, ESIC, PT, and TDS calculation
  • Gratuity accrual and Labour Code-ready wage structures
  • CTC breakup letters and payslips generated in one click
